Additional information

We will run to the pace of the group and nobody will be left behind. As a rough guide, we expect to be back with a pint within an hour. The aim of the run is to be friendly and sociable with no pressure of time. Speedier people are welcome to give it some beans should they wish – we just ask that you loop back round to scoop up the rest of the group, in keeping with the supportive vibes we’re keen to foster. So it’s great for beginners to running who are maybe looking for the next step from a parkrun, as well as more experienced runners looking for a relaxed community run.

There’s space to leave a small bag/ jacket in the taproom (we’ll of course do our best to keep an eye on them but please don’t leave any valuables behind) and all runners will get a discount off their first drink upon our return. We’ll be out come rain or shine, so please come dressed for the weather! This includes hi-viz clothing in the darker months, from October onwards please. We’d also ask there be access to emergency contact details on your person. Other than that, all you need to bring along is yourself!

After a super response to our runs so far, we now operate a sign up system to ensure a manageable group size. This will also enable us to keep in touch with you all for bonus runs, away days and possible future merchandise info too (featuring our snazzy new logo – see below, hand drawn by our in house designer James!). Please head here to pop your name down for our next event. We hope to see you soon!

Cask Ale Week 2026

National Cask Ale Week 2026 is underway! This year taking place from September 17th, until September 27th. The eagle eyed amongst you might spot that this is actually an 11 day long “week”. But when it’s in celebration of our beloved beer, who are we to argue?!

Cask beer is far and away the majority of our production here at Abbeydale. It’s the heart and soul of our existence, and we’re pretty darn proud of it too. We think we’re one of the only breweries in the UK who release a dedicated cask special each and every week. Although they’re predominately pale and hoppy, that’s not all we can do! There’s always plenty of variety available and something to suit every palate. We also don’t believe cask beer should be put in a “box” – it’s not just for traditional styles. This is why everything from our lower ABV pales all the way through to hugely hopped DIPAs and NEIPAs and big, bold stouts does – and always will – make its way into cask here at Abbeydale HQ.

Our new beer for Cask Ale Week this year is a very special one for us. It also forms part of our Legacy Series, bringing back iconic beers from throughout our existence as part of our 30th anniversary celebrations. Welcome back, Brimstone! An Amarillo hopped American Brown Ale, Brimstone was a much loved feature of our core range from 2006-2016. Having brought it back for our 20th and 25th birthdays, it felt only right that it should make another comeback for the 30th!

Brimstone is a particular favourite of our Sales Director Dan. In his words
“For me the reason why Brimstone was so special was because it looked like a traditional bitter but drank like a pale ale. Due to our particular disliking of crystal malt, the beer was instead coloured with black malt, flavouring beautifully with chocolate, toffee, and a lovely roastiness in the backbone. When coupled with Amarillo hops (the Sabro of its time!) it all balanced with a dreamy, marmalade like flavour. At 3.9% it was perfectly sessionable. You couldn’t compare any beer like it that was on the market at the time. It was a “bridge beer” for many that wanted to explore more than the normal cask bitters that were more readily available and truly experience what American hops tasted like. It was revolutionary in my opinion.”

One of the aims of Cask Ale Week is to encourage more people to try real ale. As autumn draws in, we reckon there’s nothing finer than spending an evening in a cosy pub with a couple of pints. We’d love to hear about your favourite places to do just that. Let us know by leaving us a comment.

You can find out more at caskaleweek.co.uk, including details of upcoming events in your area.

Cheers!

PS – Brimstone is available in keg and can, too!

Oktoberfest: Beer & Bites

Oktoberfest: Beer & Bites

Hallo, Oktoberfest! Our Festbier is back for 2026 and it’s out now – balanced, clean and crisp, the colour of burnished copper, with a rich, bready aroma and a delicately spicy noble hop character. Full bodied, yet ĂŒber-quaffable.

We reckon it’s the perfect addition to any celebration or gathering, and our team have been busily putting it to the test with some classic Beer Hall snacks! Here’s some suggested recipes for you to try at home

Beer cheese dip

Ingredients:
30g butter
2 tbsp flour
2 cloves minced garlic
œ tsp salt
œ tsp black pepper
200ml Oktoberfest
150g grated mature cheddar
100g grated Emmental cheese (Gouda or Gruyere would also work well)

Method:

Add your butter and garlic to a small pan over a medium heat, and fry until the butter is melted and the scent of garlic fills the kitchen. Add the flour, salt and pepper, and whisk together to form a roux. Cook for a couple of minutes, then gradually add your Oktoberfest into the roux and whisk while it thickens.

Once it’s well mixed and a gravy-esque consistency, add your cheeses a small handful at a time and keep mixing until melted – be patient and take your time rather than turning the heat up any further. Once all the cheese is melted, serve and enjoy!

We dunked homemade pretzel bites into ours, which we made to this recipe with a sea salt topping (we don’t recommend the cinnamon sugar option for this particular purpose!). It would also be great with sausages dipped in it

Beer infused Bratwurst

Ingredients:
1.5kg pork shoulder
400g pork belly
23g salt (calculated at 12g/kg)
2 tsp white pepper
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 tsp mace
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp marjoram
Ÿ tsp mustard powder
Pinch cardamom
1tsp ground coriander
œ tsp caraway seeds, crushed
200ml ICE COLD Oktoberfest
Approx 1.5m hog casing

Method:

Combine all of your dried spices. Slice the pork into strips to allow easier mincing, then coat in the dry spice mix.  We’ll be mincing twice, once through a coarse plate, then through a finer one, which should ensure a really smooth wurst.

After the first mincing, add your ice cold beer – the colder the better. Mix well, then mince again through the finer plate. This would be a good opportunity to fry up a small amount of the filling in order to check the seasoning levels (and treat yourself to a tasty snack).  Remember that the flavours will develop somewhat. Once the seasoning is to your taste, mix the sausage meat with a food processor for 2 minutes, which helps the mixture emulsify and gives a smooth finish. Place in the freezer for half an hour, along with your sausage stuffer.

Whilst the equipment is chilling, rinse the hog casings well to remove any salt, and leave to soak in fresh water.  Just before you are ready to start stuffing, place the casings on the funnel.

Slowly feed the mixture into the sausage stuffer, and once it starts to come through tie a knot in the end of the casing so that you don’t lose any precious stuffing!  This is a finickity job, which can require an extra pair of hands, but take your time over it, ensuring that the sausage skins aren’t too full or too baggy, and make yourself a really, really long sausage.

After this you’ll need to decide how long a Brat you want – for this style of Brat you’d normally expect this would be around 6-8 inches (15-20cm) long, but you do you! Pinch the sausage at the length you wish, then gently twist it until it forms a link.  Once you have a comedic length of sausages that look to be straight from a Punch and Judy show, hang them somewhere cool and dry for half an hour or so, then they’re ready to either chill, or get straight to cooking them.

Traditionally, a bratwurst is simmered for a period before being grilled – this ensures the centre has reached a safe temperature, and helps to avoid the sausages bursting. It also provides an opportunity to infuse further flavour into the sausages, so I like to poach them in beer!  Place them in a large cold pan with enough beer to cover them, and put them on a low heat until the beer is just below boiling point, then remove from the poaching liquor and allow to dry slightly.  After poaching they will be safe to store in a fridge for up to a week, or for a good few months in a freezer, or you can now put the sausages straight under the grill, into a frying pan, or, for preference, onto a BBQ.  Cook until the skin is golden and crisp, and serve in a crusty roll with sauerkraut, mustard, and of course more beer! We recommend a stein. Or as an easy snack, mix some curry powder and a little dash of vinegar in with some ketchup to make your own quick currywurst.

Let us know if you give either of the above recipes a try, or if you think there’s another pairing we shouldn’t miss!

Prost!

Dreamlike

In collaboration with Hopsteiner, we’ve created Dreamlike – a Hazy IPA that could just be the beer of our dreams! Using new to us Alora and Solero hops, expect vibrant tropical notes from mango to aromatic yuzu alongside sweet peach and passionfruit flavours. On the nose, we also found soft, sweet honeydew melon and tasty flavours that made us feel nostalgic for Juicy Fruits chewing gum!

Tantalising, ethereal, yet magically within reach. Available now in cask, keg and 440ml can. Vegan friendly and, as always, gluten free.

Hopsteiner UK celebrated their 50th anniversary last year, although Hopsteiner as a whole has been going since 1845! The UK arm of the business has historically focused on the research side, and just like us, they’ve always been innovative – looking to push boundaries whilst staying true to their roots.

Guy from Hopsteiner joined us for the brewday and has shared his vast wealth of knowledge about these fantastic hops and why they work so well together. Alora is the predominant hop in terms of flavour, and Solero brings the aroma. Both hop varieties were used in the hopback, and were also added at the dry hop stage of the brew, and the combination of the two allows for the best depth of flavour and overall rounded character in the finished beer.

Here comes the science bit!

Alora is a hop which we’ve been very excited to use for some time now. It’s got a real uniqueness on the aroma, a “je ne sais quoi” if you will – which Guy tells us is due to the presence of an oil called Selinene. This is not commonly found in hops, usually only being present in certain exotic fruits such as yuzu. There are a number of as yet unidentified oils in there too which also make it distinctive and special – but that doesn’t mean it makes beers that are weird! Thanks to the work of Hopsteiner’s breeding programme, they’ve been able to meticulously identify a number of genetic markers in hops, enabling them to hybridise different varieties to get the traits they (and of course, us and our fellow brewers) are looking for. Not just in terms of exploring aroma patterns, but also in the somewhat less sexy sounding but incredibly important tolerance to disease. Sustainability and security of supply for years to come is increasingly necessary as we face climate change. The more Hopsteiner have learnt about genetic markers, the more confident they can be in the ability of the new hop plant varieties to survive, balanced alongside them having exemplary characteristics across aroma and flavour potential.

Also on the topic of how growing hops has needed to adapt to a changing world, Solero has come from a breeding programme based in Germany, which was initially focussed on drought tolerance. Predominantly grown by independent growers and supporting independent farming, Solero not only boasts consistent growing traits – very helpful to the famers – but also has OODLES of mango character (think of the ice cream that shares the name!). In common with other German hop varietals, it’s super versatile and can be used in a vast range of beer styles – from lagers, making best use of its noble characteristics, to rounding out pale ales fantastically. It holds a whole host of delicious flavours which aren’t too bold or punchy, but fill in the gaps and gel really well with other hops – especially something so tropical forward as Alora.

We used a hop product called Salvo to add the Solero, an extract with 10% oil which doesn’t contain the alpha pickup. This means you get a true representation of the hop variety, but with no added bitterness. As oils aren’t particularly volatile, they carry through into beer really efficiently, meaning we don’t need to add as much (just 2kg went in, which is the equivalent of 20kg of whole cone hops) but get just as much from them. Hopsteiner can also sell the alpha that’s been extracted as a separate product, reducing waste and meaning the Salvo can be kept more competitive on price – a win for the environment, a win for our business and a win for your pocket!

Guy and many of those who work for Hopsteiner are brewers themselves and so understand the needs of the brewers and what they want from a hop as well as what the growers need, with an emphasis on reliability and consistency. So this beer release can be seen as more than just a collaboration brew – it’s a collaboration across the whole industry. Hop growers respond to the changing conditions of the world and work cohesively. And for us, having some behind the scenes insight of what has gone into the ingredients we use is really valuable. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about them too!

A huge thank you to Guy and Hopsteiner for working with us on this project. As the name suggests, we reckon the beer is just dreamy!

Pilgrim is BACK!

TIS THE SEASON! Our most hotly anticipated annual release is finally here. It’s Pilgrim time, and this year, it’s brought an all new pumpkin spiced pal along!

Our pumpkin spiced pale ale has become, dare we say it, a bit of a Halloween icon that heralds the arrival of spooky season across the beery land. First released in 2017, our Pilgrim was originally inspired by a trip to America. We came back with a secret recipe provided by friend of the brewery and World Beer Cup award winning brewer Dan Rogers. We knew we were taking a bit of a risk that first time Pilgrim was unleashed upon our drinkers, with pumpkin spiced everything not having quite the pull over here as it did on the other side of the Atlantic. But it immediately found its niche, and now we couldn’t imagine our autumn without it!

AND THAT’S NOT ALL. This year, our intrepid little Pilgrim hasn’t been alone on its journey, and has brought along an even more EXTRA friend! Introducing MARSHMALLOW PILGRIM, a Pumpkin Pie stout bringing a little bit of the dark side to this Halloween. Featuring the same lip-smacking blend of warming pumpkin pie spices as the OG Pilgrim and also coming in at 5.0% ABV, but with roasted malts for extra cosy campfire vibes and additions of sweet vanilla and fluffy marshmallow that’s sure to have you coming back for s’more

Last year Pilgrim sold out in record time! So this year, along with adding a new squash sibling to the family, we’ve upped the brewlength and will have more Pilgrim available than ever before. GOOD GOURD!

Casks and kegs sold out during the pre-order window, but we still have cans of both Pilgrim releases available for trade customers, and on our online shop. Plus, we’ve got Pilgrim tees and even Pilgrim inspired pumpkin spiced vodka available, distilled for us by The Sheffield Distillery Co. It makes an absolutely fantastic White Russian!

Join our Pilgrimage and let’s get this Pilgrim party started! (PS – join us for an actual Pilgrim Party at our very own Abbeydale Beerworks taproom, from Thursday 29th to Saturday 31st October!)
