The latest collaboration in our Travel Poster series is here! This time weâve teamed up with the mighty Brew York, who turn 10 this year â happy birthday, Brew York! When coupled with our 30th, this means weâre celebrating 40 years of brewing between us⊠so for a ruby anniversary, we just had to go for a red beer. Introducing Roam Around York, a 4.8% Red Rye IPA, using both hops and malts which are new to us at Abbeydale HQ.
We took advice from the team at renowned maltsters Weyermann for the backbone of this beer, particularly how to best allow the reddish hue to shine through. And so along with our base malt Maris Otter weâve used dark rye, Cararye, Carared barley and melanoidin malt. The special caramelisation process these tasty grains have undergone results in a complex and rounded profile with hints of dark chocolate, dried fruits and flaky pastry, alongside hints of biscuit, honey and caramel, with a velvety soft overall mouthfeel.
Layered atop this of course is where we find our hops! Weâve used Karma and Emperor from Charles Faramâs pioneering hop development programme (which you can read all about here), plus Admiral, which along with Emperor is grown in the UK. Despite coming from a British development scheme (in partnership with Yakima Valleyâs Puterbaugh Farms) and with UK varietals as parents, the Karma hops are actually grown in the US as they werenât huge fans of the English climate! What this combination creates is a cornucopia of zesty orange character â from sweet citrussy sherbet to bitter, pithy marmalade â and a warming spicy, resinous edge. Overall combining classic UK hop flavours with a flourish of cutting-edge character.
Fittingly, this release follows hot on the heels of Brew Yorkâs release of Blood Moon, the red ale we made at their place last month. That one also follows the ruby inspired theme, and is a pithy, bold and delicious 5.5% Chinook and Centennial hopped Red IPA. Itâs available from Brew York directly here, and look out for kegs of it on the bar at The Rising Sun and Abbeydale Beerworks!
With thanks to Beth and the team at Charles Faram, and Axel and John from Weyermann, for the information and advice that has helped bring this beer to life! Roam Around York is available now, in cask and keg.
Cheers!
