Hand crafted cask beer from Sheffield

Cask ale is a huge part of British culture, and of Abbeydale Brewery’s history – a link to our past and a big part of our future.  A well kept pint of independently brewed real ale, enjoyed in a traditional British pub, is for us one of life’s great pleasures.

As well as our well known range of core beer, we always maintain different series of specials to give a bit of variety to your bar.  Here our designers are given themes and ideas to run with, and our brewers choose their favourites from our hop store to make sure we always have something new and interesting in stock.  Our Doctor Morton’s beers have been running for many years, including Pat Morton himself on the design, and feature some of the absurd humour that has always been a part of our brewery

In 2016 we engaged Sheffield based Field Design and artist James Green to update the branding and ensure the beers continue to look as relevant today as they still taste.  And in 2020 we made these beers available in can for the first time, using the same recipe as for cask with just a little sparkle added prior to packaging.

Moonshine 4.3% Our flagship pale ale Our flagship pale, and our most famous beer. Moonshine has been in production since way back in 1996, when our brewery led the path to America to experiment with hops never before seen in the UK. More than 20 years down the line and Moonshine is still a firm favourite across the board. Hopped with Willamette, Delta, Citra, Chinook & Centennial - this is a beautifully well balanced pale perfect for any occasion. Multi award winner, including Bronze medal winning Golden Ale at the CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain Awards 2018.

Deception 4.1% New Zealand Pale Ale Light and refreshing NZ pale, showcasing the incredible Nelson Sauvin hops famed for delicious citrus flavours with hints of gooseberry and white grape. Primarily hopped with Nelson, balanced by the addition of other hops including Amarillo, Chinook, Galaxy and Columbus giving a crisp bitter finish. A multi award winner, including Champion Beer of Sheffield 2011.

Black Mass 6.66% Black IPA One of the world's longest standing Black IPAs. Brewed using 6 different malts including chocolate malts, black malts and roasted barley. Generously hopped with Cascade and Green Bullet. Flavours reminiscent of bitter chocolate, fruitcake and raisins, with beautiful aromas of coffee, pine, and burnt toast. A beast of a brew! 4 time Gold Medallist at the CAMRA Champion Beer of Yorkshire awards (2017, 2015, 2011 and 2009) and winner of the Speciality IPA category at the SIBA North East Bottle & Can Awards 2022... then at the SIBA National Bottle & Can Awards 2023, where it also scooped OVERALL CHAMPION!

Doctor Morton’s % Famous Tinctures, salves and treatments Doctor Morton is here to solve all your medicinal, therapeutic and pisciatric needs. Are you customers bothered by angry fishermen, dry throats or killer clowns? Doctor Morton has the (liquid) solution to any ailment. The good Doctor will be releasing these treatments into the wild on a regular basis, mainly after his afternoon nap. Available without prescription.

Through the Hopback Series % Celebrating our very special Hopback

Through the Hopback Series % Celebrating our very special Hopback A series of one-off cask specials, showcasing one of our very favourite pieces of kit, our beloved hopback! Originally used as a mashtun, this humble little wood-clad vessel has been with us since the early days of the brewery (although it is a little bigger than our very first ever mashtun!) Since our brewery upgrade back in 2010, the hopback is now used to infuse the wort with oodles of lovely hops after the beer has been boiled and made it out of the kettle, to ensure our beers benefit as much as possible from delicate hop oils and aromas that would otherwise be boiled away and lost. Using whole leaf hops at this stage also acts as a filter bed (our hopback has a bespoke, specially made filter plate as part of it) which helps to remove surplus proteins from the wort and aids clarity in your pint. A lot of breweries don't have this luxury, so it's a very special part of our brewing process and was absolutely instrumental in allowing us to build our reputation as creators of delicious, hoppy pale ales! So we're very much looking forward to giving it a bit of glory on our pumpclips, as designed by our in-house artist, James Murphy

Stained Glass Series % A window into the world of our spectacular specials Drawing together some of our best loved specials into a thematically satisfying series, our stained glass series has given these beers a timeless element, in keeping with the loosely ecclesiastical motif which ties together many of our heritage beers. Designs by James David Murphy were inspired by the original artworks from over the years, with plenty of scope to further expand the series in the future. An array of ales of astonishing variety, we're certain this range will offer something to tantalise your tastebuds!
